Climate Justice Summit: People Deliver

Event description

Join us for the Climate Justice Summit: People Deliver, a dynamic event kicking off New York Climate Week on September 22nd and 23rd at The Forum at Columbia University. This summit is a powerful convening of climate justice leaders from around the world, focusing on global collaboration and knowledge exchange. This summit aims to catalyze global collaboration to drive progress on climate justice, particularly across the following themes:

  • People Power: Highlight the power and importance of community-led initiatives in addressing climate challenges. This theme will showcase the social, economic, and environmental benefits of nature solutions driven by frontline communities, emphasizing their leadership and firsthand knowledge in creating effective strategies.
  • Climate Justice Funding: Explore the critical efforts underway to challenge institutional philanthropy to deepen its commitments to BIPOC-led and serving climate justice work and those who have taken the Donors of Color Network's Climate Funders Justice Pledge to mobilize finance for a winning climate movement that centers racial and economic justice.
  • Climate Governance and Inclusive Decision-Making: Dive into democratic innovation and policymaking that prioritizes community engagement. This theme will highlight the importance of Action for Climate Empowerment (ACE) and feature collaboration between governments and civil society to promote transparency and human human-rights, and enhance climate action that is locally-led.
  • Sustainable Cities and Food Systems: Explore strategies for urban resilience and the role of subnational governments in advancing climate justice policies. Learn about the work of the HBCU Green Fund in Atlanta and several African countries, including support for the Green Wall initiative.
  • Reparative Justice: Develop redress and accountability mechanisms for communities most impacted by climate change, including through the co-development of a Climate Reparations Framework, ensuring that those on the frontlines of climate impacts are central to discussions and solutions for loss and damage.

Discussions will feature frontline communities, land defenders, international policymakers, researchers, funders, and BIPOC climate justice leaders. The topics will include climate justice implementation strategies, enabling conditions, and the roles of people, policy, pedagogy, and philanthropies in delivering them.

This special gathering is collaboratively hosted by HBCU Green Fund, Donors of Color Network, Columbia World Projects, ACE Observatory, Open Government Partnership, and Columbia University Climate School.
