Event description

The Australia Institute in collaboration with the Climate Mayors Initiative is hosting a conversation about why it’s smart to investment in climate action being taken in cities by local governments.

Mayors and the local Councils they lead have been taking climate action in Australia and globally for over 20 years, but these voices aren’t as present and influential as they could be in our national climate debates.

The European Union has had a strong focus on supporting climate action in urban communities for more than two decades, and in the United States the philanthropic sector has had a major focus on supporting city leadership on climate change, including Climate Mayors.

This event will explore how climate action and emission reductions can be quickly and effectively scaled up in Australia by working more closely with Mayors and local governments.

Hosted by Amy Remeikis, the event will feature a welcome by the Lord Mayor of Sydney, Councillor Clover Moore AO, followed by a panel with Councillor Anna Reynolds, Lord Mayor, City of Hobart and Gregor Robertson, form Mayor of Vancouver and Mayors4Climate Global Ambassador. There will be an opportunity for drinks and networking at the end of the event.

As numbers for this event are limited, please register your expression of interest to attend.

What is the Climate Mayors Initiative?

Mayors are uniquely suited to drive ambitious, systemic, and equitable climate action. As influencers we’re well-known and trusted in our communities. As implementers, we provide practical insights into how to develop and execute effective policies and programs.

Mayors talk about climate change in ways that are tangible; we can show that climate solutions are possible and build trust in governments’ ability to address the climate crisis.

Many Australian Mayors are eager to bring this expertise to bear at the national and international level - to influence and shape the priorities, policies, and funding emerging.

Climate Mayors seeks to be the platform for Mayors to engage on climate advocacy in Australia. We know that we’re the bright spot for ambition and delivery on climate action and resilience building, but that there’s much more that we could do together with coordination and support.
