How do we revegetate for a climate that is changing?

Traditional revegetation practice has generally focused on using locally sourced seed, based on the principle that local species and provenances are best adapted to local conditions. But as temperatures, rainfall patterns and other conditions change, should we be thinking differently about what we plant and where we source our seed?

This free workshop will explore the science and practical implications of developing more climate-resilient revegetation practices. We’ll consider how genetic diversity, species selection and seed sourcing could help future plantings cope with changing conditions, including the potential role of species and provenances from warmer and drier parts of Australia.

Hear from researchers and local practitioners, explore the Restore and Renew webtool, and learn about on-ground climate-ready revegetation projects. A panel discussion will consider what climate change could mean for native vegetation in the Illawarra and Shoalhaven, followed by small group discussions about what these ideas could mean for local nurseries and Landcare restoration projects.

Who is this for?

The workshop is open to all. We welcome Landcare volunteers, land managers, restoration practitioners, community nurseries, seed collectors and anyone interested in the future of local vegetation.

Pre-event survey

Your registration will include a request to fill in a short survey in advance, asking you about your observations of local species and any concerns about the impacts of climate change on revegetation in your area. This feedback will help inform the workshop planning and discussion.
