Clinical Procedures for School-Age Children who stutter 7-12 years

This workshop is designed for speech pathologists to gain the knowledge and skills necessary to assist school-age children who stutter.

The information in the workshop is presented by speech pathologists who specialise in stuttering treatment.

The workshop begins with an overview of the characteristics of stuttering in school age children, measurement of stuttering, and initial assessment. Overarching principles to guide clinical practice with this client group are introduced.

Evidence-based stuttering treatments are described including the Lidcombe Program, the Oakville Program, KIDS, speech restructuring treatment and self-imposed time-out. The focus of this workshop is not to teach the individual treatments but to problem solve which treatments to employ as well as common issues in their implementation.

Participants learn through discussion and role-play, through video demonstration and by hearing from all key stakeholders including children who stutter, their parents, speech pathologists and psychologists.

Learning outcomes for participants include:

Understand the general characteristics of stuttering in school-age children
Assess and measure stuttering in this population
Gain an understanding of the role of the speech pathologist when working with this population
Describe the evidence for, and have an understanding of, treatments that may be used
Gain experience in problem solving some of the clinical issues encountered

Prior Learning Recommendations:

Although not mandatory, we strongly encourage attending the Lidcombe Program and Syllable Timed Speech workshops before joining this session. These workshops introduce key program techniques that will not be revisited during this workshop.

To ensure a productive learning experience, participants are expected to have a working understanding of programs discussed. Pre-reading materials will be distributed prior to the workshop to support your preparation.

This workshop will be presented by Zoom, over four modules and is open to speech pathologists and students around the world. If the time and date works for your local time zone, please feel free to register. Note: the workshop will be conducted in English.
