Clockshop and Floating co-present Listening by Moonrise at Los Angeles State Historic Park, featuring the eclectic and evocative sounds of local artists Dustin Wong and Sharada Shashidhar on Sunday, October 1, from 3:00–5:00 PM. A recent Floating Artist-in-Residence, Wong’s two-decade-long career is marked by an unwavering commitment to challenging himself and his collaborators throughout his personal practice and ensemble work, including the bands Ecstatic Sunshine & Ponytail. Wong has consistently produced some of our generation's most dynamic, vibrant, and architectural soundscapes. A purveyor of elaborate harmonies and compelling songwriting, Shashidhar is a lifelong vocalist and musician whose soulful voice takes inspiration from both jazz and Indian classical music. She composes powerful songs that explore universal themes of inner and outer exploration and has both performed and recorded with the legendary Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra.

Savory and sweet treats will be available from our friends, Gu Grocery. Jess Wang, the founder of Gu, is a second-generation Chinese and Taiwanese American artist, pastry chef, and fermentation educator based in Los Angeles. She collaborates with her Taiwanese-born Wenzhounese mama, Peggy, to preserve old family recipes and develop new ways of making food to feed you! Preorder your picnic for the event here.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Dustin Wong was born in Hawai‘i, raised in Tokyo, and graduated from the Maryland Institute College of Art. Wong was a band member of Ecstatic Sunshine and Ponytail and has collaborated with artist Takako Minekawa on three records. He performs as a solo musician and has opened for artists like Beach House, Mac DeMarco, Animal Collective, and others on tour. He has also released three albums in 2023: Perpetual Morphosis with Hausu Mountain, Texture II in collaboration with Brin on Leaving Records, and 森の穴 with Patrick Shiroishi on A Red Thread. Wong now lives in Los Angeles, exploring and collaborating with local artists, and hosts a monthly show on dublab, Why Did Why Did Why Did.

Sharada Shashidhar is a Los Angeles-based vocalist, composer, and producer. Her unique melodies are molded by her background in North and South Indian classical music and jazz, and her innate love for studying and observing sounds. She has also participated in various reputed music programs across the US and performed internationally. Shashidhar graduated from the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in New York City and released her debut EP, Rahu, in March 2020 on Leaving Records. Rahu is the culmination of her experience in creation and the forms it takes in her life.

Gu Grocery is a Chinese Taiwanese pop-up concept rooted in family recipes and traditional flavors, known for their savory picnic sets and large selection of baked goods featuring fun, seasonal, and local Californian ingredients. Find them weekly at the LA River Farmers’ Market on Thursdays.

Los Angeles State Historic Park is located  at 1315 N Spring St, Los Angeles, CA 90012, directly adjacent to Chinatown and the Metro A Line.
The program will take place in the shaded grassy area behind the Welcome Pavilion. Clockshop’s table will be near the Welcome Pavilion on the paved walking path.

Parking options

The park will open the dirt overflow parking lot directly in front of the Welcome Pavilion, which is free and first come, first served.
The main parking lot will be closed.
There is also free street parking around the park. Please avoid parking near residential homes on the east side of Main Street and give yourself plenty of time to park and walk over!
We highly encourage taking public transit or ridesharing to this event.

Floating is a weekly all-ages outdoors arts series that explores the harmony between soundscape and landscape.
