Close the loop - Materials and making workshop

This event has passed Get tickets

Event description

This curated experience is a collaborative fashion and craft making workshop conducted by The Social Studio and Ugly Cute Collective (Michelle Phan). You'll be taught the basics of how to crochet and make a statement sling pouch bag using fabric scraps; the aim of this workshop is to not only make your own piece of wearable art but to make space to talk about creativity, slow fashion, fashion’s waste and its solutions.

An upcycling-recycling workshop where participants have the opportunity to get crafty and have a yarn while crocheting with rag yarns sourced from TSS’s own cutting room floor, the ‘Close the loop’ theme is a literal and figurative reference to both the craft of crochet and the wider fashion system.

We'll discuss what it would take to create a kinder, more conscious fashion industry, and how fashion citizens can help close the loop within supply chains. Participants are welcome to bring along their unwanted fabric scraps from home which can be exchanged for TSS’s rag yarn in return. This is a workshop to empower the wider community through creativity.

About the event organiser:

The Social Studio In 2009, a group of Melbourne community members, local designers and fashion industry professionals joined together with a common idea: to embrace up-cycled fashion as a vehicle for social change and uplift youth from migrant and refugee backgrounds.

Working side-by-side with the community-at-large, our unique not-for-profit model was born as an initiative to empower; creating education and employment pathways and in the process involving wider new migrant and refugee communities, too.
