Description

Ageing parents who need us more. A job that we cannot quit. Kids or friends who need us too. And us, somewhere underneath it all.

If that landed somewhere in your chest - stay with us.

This is the generation nobody wrote a manual for. Our parents are living longer than any generation in history, and needing us in ways we didn't see coming ... the phone calls, the appointments, the slow realisation that the roles are quietly reversing. Our kids, if we have them have needs as they navigate a difficult world . Little ones with big timetables or teenagers with tough times. Even young adults still needing money, a couch, a conversation. You thought they'd be gone by now. They're not.

So we're holding it all at once - caring up and caring down - while also working, earning, reinventing, navigating our own midlife, and keeping a roof over a lot of other people's heads.

Most of us are privately astonished at what we're carrying. And publicly pretending it's fine while secretly scared we are burning out.

It's not a phase. It's not a failure of organisation. It's the Midlife Collision - the longest careers in history colliding with the longest lives in history, landing squarely on one generation. This one. Us.

We called this event It's A Lot. Because it is. And because pretending otherwise is how we got here.

Thursday 14 May, 8:00-9:00pm AEST. The eve of International Families Day. We picked 8pm on purpose. It's about the only hour of the day when no one's asking a midlifer for anything - dishes done, kids (hopefully) down the evening shift finally clocked off, the dog walked, the email ignored. Grab a cuppa or a glass of wine or some chocolate. Find the comfy chair.

We see you. We've got you.

Lineup

  • ๐ŸŽ™๏ธ Sarah Macdonald | Host

    ๐ŸŽ™๏ธ Sarah Macdonald | Host

Broadcaster, journalist, host of Club Sandwich - the podcast and community for the generation holding a lot and wondering if it's just them. 25+ years on ABC Radio, commercial networks and in print. Deep in the sandwich generation herself. Sarah opens the night, holds the room, and asks the questions everyone's been privately thinking.

  • ๐Ÿง  Jo Lamble | Clinical psychologist, "Detangler" and regular "Clubber" on the Club Sandwich podcast

๐Ÿง  Jo Lamble | Clinical psychologist, "Detangler" and regular "Clubber" on the Club Sandwich podcast

One of Australia's most trusted clinical psychologists, with 30+ years in private practice and a regular on Australian television. Jo joins us live to hold the heavier ground - guilt, grief, identity, the things midlifers carry and don't say - so the conversation can go where journalists alone couldn't safely take it.

  • ๐Ÿ“Š Melissa Reader | CEO of Vera, "The Founder" and regular "Clubber" on the Club Sandwich podcast

๐Ÿ“Š Melissa Reader | CEO of Vera, "The Founder" and regular "Clubber" on the Club Sandwich podcast

CEO of Vera, the Australian technology platform focused on ageing and caregiving โ€” and Commissioning Editor of Club Sandwich. Melissa brings the data behind what this room is living: the 66% who've reduced their hours, the 38% who've exited work, the 45% who've missed a promotion. And the language, and lived experience to put around all of it.

Description

One hour, three voices, and an extra 15 minutes of live Q&A you won't want to skip.

Sarah Macdonald opens the night in her own voice - the one you already know from Club Sandwich. Melissa Reader brings the data and the language. Dr Jo Lamble holds the heavier ground - guilt, grief, identity, the things most of us carry and don't say.

We'll name the thing we're all holding. We'll put words around it. And we'll leave you with three small things you can do this week that will actually change something.

No corporate pep talk. No EAP pitch. No bubble baths or scented candles. Just a real, warm, properly held conversation about the most common experience of midlife that nobody's named yet.

Testimonials

  • I'm not alone.

"I went to a Club Sandwich event in October. Sarah read out the exact sentence I'd been saying to myself in the car. I drove home knowing it wasn't just me. I hadn't known that ten seconds before."

    Jen W., Sydney
  • Carenting.

"I went alone. Someone finally put a name on it - Carenting. I've used that word ten times since. Every woman I've said it to has stopped and gone 'oh my god, yes.' That's what the night did for me."

    Lisa C., Melbourne
