Coelic disease is a complicated and debilitating disease affecting 1.4% of the global population, 315,000 in Australia over 315,000 and 36,000 in regional Queensland. There is no treatment currently - except following a gluten-free diet.

Pharmaceutical companies are exploring novel therapeutics in Coeliac disease to modulate the immune response to gluten ingestion. Over the last 5 years, 15 novel therapeutics have progressed to various stages of clinical trial development in humans for Coeliac disease.

Previous trials assessing responses to small intakes of gluten have resulted in the development of new diagnostics for Coeliac disease in patients.

There are trials underway to identify safe amounts of gluten intake to inform how gluten-free products can be classified on shop shelves.

Dr Daveson has been involved in clinical trials exploring novel therapeutics in Coeliac disease since 2008, and in 2018 he was able to expand these to regional Queensland through Coral Sea Clinical Research Institute, who is recruiting for a new Coeliac disease trial.
