In June 2024, the Crimes Legislation Amendment (Coercive Control) Bill 2022 (NSW) will come into force, making 'coercive control' a criminal offence and providing a definition of domestic abuse. These reforms are projected to have a significant impact on society's understanding on personal and domestic violence and alter the way institutions respond to abuse. This panel seeks to offer different perspectives on the potential impacts that these reforms will have on our courts, victims, offenders and broader society. It is an opportunity to interrogate the culture surrounding domestic abuse and engage with professionals who work in law, policy, and social work to develop a more holistic understanding of coercive control.

MULS is honoured to welcome Abigail Boyd MLC, Member of the Greens Party, who will the keynote speaker discussing the upcoming reforms. Joining Abigail will be a panel, featuring Annabelle Daniel OAM from Women's Community Shelter, Liz Snell from Women's Legal Centre NSW, Dr Andrew Burke from the MQ Law School, and Jane Meredith from Legal Aid NSW. Our intention is to facilitate critical discussion between attendees and the panellists, encouraging attendees to ask questions and delve into the complexities of the new amendments.
