Coffee & Lyrics - Presented by Freo Groove

Welcome to ‘Coffee & Lyrics’ at the Hybrid Warehouse for 2025, a show brought to you by Freo folk duo, Sea Swallow – also authors of the book “Freo Groove”.

Our first show for the year features acclaimed Broome singer-songwriter Wil Thomas, with a dusty blend of folk and rock, and a nod towards the blues.

With his tales of bush rangers and modern-day political gangsters, Wil sings with passion and conviction, of redemption, love and revolution. Weaving stories from a stormy Celtic coastline all the way to the blood-red dirt of the Kimberley and featuring songs from his new album “The Riding Light”, which builds on the poetry of his earlier “Fisherman’s Bend” album.

Appearing along with Wil is Gillian O'Shaughnessy, a writer from Walyalup, Fremantle who specialises in very short stories, under 1000 words. The former ABC presenter has been writing flash fiction for four years now and has won a range of international writing prizes, including the London Independent Story Prize, the UK Reflex prize for Flash Fiction, the US Fractured Literature Anthology Prize and Writing WA's Love to Read Local Award for Flash Fiction.

Gillian will be reading a series of stories she describes as unreliable memories, inspired by the landscapes and people of Fremantle and the south west, the shortest of which won the UK Welkin Prize and is just 100 words long.

The show starts at 1030, so please come early to grab your spot on the comfy couches and get your coffee before the machine gets turned off for the performances.

Doors open at 10am

The café will be open well ahead of the event starting. Please arrive early to get coffee and refreshments so that the room can be quiet in time for the show to begin at 10.30am

Kids under 14 are free.
