Collage and Freewrite: In-Person Writing and Crafting Circle
Arts & (Literary) Craft
Create a few small collages from a collection of provided images, paper, and assorted media. Start each collage process with a moment of generative writing to get you thinking about the colors, textures, and scenes you'll be handling for your artwork. Flex your skills in sensation and imagery by trying something tactile and new! Perfect for writers and crafters of all levels and experience.
This 2 hour session is balanced in both art and (literary) craft! Enter a creative flow (and stay in it!) as each activity you do seamlessly leads to the next.
All supplies and materials are provided! 🎨

Kirk Read
Kirk Read is the author of How I Learned to Snap, which was an American Library Association Honor Book. He co-leads the Pacific Northwest Collage Collective. His collage has been seen in Contemporary Collage Magazine, Cut Me Up, RFD and Khora. He co-curated NO/STALGIA, an international collage exhibition of over 80 artists and What Remains Now, a group show of Portland collage artists. He had a solo show "You Should Have Gotten Here Sooner,” at Replicant in Portland. He co-orgnaized the Radical Faerie Arts Festival, featuring over 100 artists in various disciplines. He created the solo shows “This is the Thing” and “Computer Face,” for which SF Weekly called him the “Freak Prince of San Francisco.” He toured with Sister Spit and the Sex Workers Art Show. As founder and director of Army of Lovers, he produced over 300 literary and performance events in San Francisco and has been organizing artists and writers in Portland since 2020. He was the editor in chief at Virginia’s statewide LGBT monthly and has published writing in hundreds of newspapers, magazines and anthologies. He lives in Portland and works as a registered nurse with homeless people detoxing from street drugs.

Try something new or add to your existing practice. Our groups are great for new and experienced writers and crafters alike! Led by a Write Around Portland volunteer facilitator, this Freewrite consists of writing, collage, sharing, and giving strengths-based feedback to each other.
Unlock Your Creativity
This Freewrite & Collage session is 2 hours long with 1 hour for collage and 1 hour for writing! Your facilitator will give you prompts to inspire your artwork, but feel free to write whatever you want!

- Will I need to bring my own supplies?
You don't need to bring anything! All supplies and materials will be provided.
There is an option to cover the cost of the provided supplies and materials, but it is an optional fee.
- How much collage will we do? How much writing?
About an even split of both! 50/50!
