    Workshop Session 1

Geli Plate Monoprinting Workshop with Elaine Steele Explore the expressive possibilities of colour through mono printing using a geli plate, rollers and water-based inks. This hands-on workshop focuses on layering colour, playing with transparencies, and discovering how different colour combinations interact and transform on the plate. Using natural and found stencils such as feathers, leaves, flowers, cut-outs and textured materials, you will build richly layered prints with depth and movement. You will learn how to create unique images on a variety of papers, how to control colour intensity and transparency, and how to make your own geli plate. All materials are provided, and you are welcome to bring your own flat mark-making stencils such as feathers, string or flat plant shapes. A playful and inspiring workshop, ideal for anyone looking to explore colour in an intuitive and experimental way.

    Workshop Session 2

Colour Mixing and Matching without Magic! with Tony Windberg Take the mystery and mess out of colour mixing. Learn a super-effective and easy method of matching the colours you see with a surprisingly small palette of well-chosen paint pigments. Discover where these colours belong on the neutral centred colour wheel (paints, all materials, handouts provided). Learn how to use this ‘map’ to predict the colour pathways between colours. Understand the 3 directions a colour can go – hue, chroma and tone – and mix colours with confidence. Beginning with a fun interactive colour arranging activity, you’ll see how the development of a flat colour wheel makes life so much easier once you know which colour goes where! Create your own colour reference sheet showing paint pigment homes then chart low and high chroma mixtures. Discover the effectiveness of neutralising with opposite colours, mix a black with ‘life’ without using black, manipulate temperature with the ‘white or no white’ challenge, then put it all into practice by matching local leaf colours.

  • 12:20 pm - 1:00 pm

    Lunch

Included in the morning session fee. Savoury & beverage.

  • 1:00 pm - 2:20 pm

    Workshop Session 3

The Colour Universe with Paul Green-Armytage of Colour Society of Australia. This workshop offers a practical introduction to how we see and understand colour, and how colours relate to one another. Across the session you will: • Explore the difference between colour stimulus and colour sensation • Use coloured tiles to compare how colours differ from, or relate to, one another • Consider how colour communicates meaning, beyond just bright or vivid tones • Examine the role of pale, dark and muted colours in conveying mood and message • Learn the concepts of hue family, hue neighbours and colour character • Discover how colour can be mapped within a three dimensional “colour universe” • Construct a small model using 39 colours as reference points Participants will also receive a handout with information about the Colour Society of Australia and the international Colour Literacy Project, including links to further resources.

  • 2:20 pm - 2:45 pm

    Afternoon tea

Included in the afternoon session fee. Sweet, savoury & tea/coffee.

  • 2:45 pm - 4:05 pm

    Workshop Session 4

Your Colours Speak with Ruth Marrion of Colour Society of Australia Most people are aware that there are colours they like, even love, and other colours they don’t like. They also realise that their choices can be different from the colour preferences other people in their circle have. Resulting from her Masters Degree in Design research Ruth has designed a tool to help individuals identify the range and characteristics of the colours they prefer through making comparisons. The colours they identify as “theirs” will probably work well for their clothing choices and interiors because they are part of their identity. Ruth will put this tool to work in our workshop for you to identify your personal colour preferences. She will give a chart to use later as a conclusion is reached. The tool was developed with the help of new Interior Design students at TAFE.

Artist Talk with Tony Windberg PAG Community Art Studio Balang Mia Community Hub, Brockman Street, Pemberton - Entry via Hepple Place The new ‘Leaf Fall’ community mural is for artist facilitator Tony Windberg a visual essay on colour. Spanning over 17 metres on 15 aluminium composite panels, it leads the viewer into the arts hub from afar. Tony will show the colour strategies used to create and reflect the hues of aerial landscapes and endemic birds: optical and physical mixing, combining high and low chroma, and playing with colour proportions. He’ll reveal how colour card games led to a 3-colour formula used for printing leaves, highlighting the art of tweaking tone, chroma and hue to make colours pop. Behind the scenes ‘fine art’ painting techniques that feature in the mural will be discussed and demonstrated: from masking to foam rollers, dry-brushing to glazing.

  • Tony Windberg

    Tony Windberg

Tony Windberg is a respected Australian landscape artist based in Pemberton who works across a wide spectrum of artistic approaches, in his pursuit of realism. Along with traditional drawing and painting media, he connects to his subject by using materials and pigments gathered from the bush, reflecting natural textures and hues. Despite his frequent ‘earthy’ artwork and love of browns, he also revels in more vivid forays into the world of colour! In over 3 decades of teaching, he has refined and shared his approach to colour mixing and matching. Tony graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (Fine Arts) from Curtin University in 1986, with a major in painting and a solid grounding in colour from Paul Green-Armytage. He has held numerous solo shows and exhibited in prestigious national and state group exhibitions. His artwork has won numerous awards and is represented in private, public and corporate collections.

  • Paul Green-Armytage

    Paul Green-Armytage

He had some ten years’ experience as a practising designer in England, Canada and Australia, working as an architect, exhibition designer and set designer for television, before taking up a position, in 1976, as senior lecturer in charge of the first year program in design at what is now Curtin University. He was awarded his PhD in 2005, for his thesis Colour, Language and Design. He has contributed papers to leading scientific journals and many national and international conferences, several by invitation. He has served as Vice President of the International Colour Association and as President of the Colour Society of Australia. Paul is a founding member of the Colour Literacy Project.

  • Ruth Marrion

    Ruth Marrion

Ruth Marrion is a Life Member of the Colour Society of Australia and a former Chair of the Western Australian Division. Always interested in understanding how people communicate with each other, both verbally and non-verbally, Ruth came to the conclusion that matching clothing colours to her given colouring based on advice found in a popular book gave the wrong message about her personality. Ruth trained in Personal Colours Analysis before completing in 2000 a critical examination of the assumptions and practices in this industry as a Master's study supervised by Paul Green-Armytage in the Department of Design at Curtin University. Ruth put together a YouTube presentation about the whole issue of Personal Colours Analysis and its relation to Personal Colour Preferences.

  • Tony Marrion
