Come As You Are September Morning Tea

We welcome those who have a lived experience of disability, who are neurodivergent, and/or live with chronic illness at Murdoch to join us for causal morning tea in September at Sir Walters Cafe.

When:

Date: Tuesday 29th of September (29/9/2026)

Time: 10.30am-11:30am

Where:

Murdoch University South St Campus Sir Walter's Restaurant 425.2.005 (ground level)   

What to expect:

• Casual talking

• Relaxed small social gathering in a Cafe

• Games available to play, such as card games

• Food provided: sweet platter with fruit

• Drinks provided: such as juice, or hot drinks

• Opportunity to meet staff/students who may have shared experiences

We have a few activities to keep the hands busy such as Lego, origami and fidget tools which we can bring upon request (please request in the checkout questions). Feel free to also bring your own activities/objects if this helps you feel more comfortable such as your recent crochet/knitting project.

Catering   

Catering provided will include drinks such as tea, coffee, juice and grazing platter with fruit, sweet and savoury snacking options. Please write down any dietary requirements you have in the RSVP checkout questions, so we can accommodate requirements and note them with the venue. If you have a severe allergy or are anaphylactic, we strongly recommend that you bring your EpiPen.   

Please RSVP if you are attending, as we need to know numbers for catering purposes. In the RSVP process there will be some check out questions that are optional.

Organisers of the event will be present 30mins before the start time if you wish to come by early to familiarise yourself with the venue.

We will do our best to accommodate requests, and advance notice helps us arrange support. Background of the Come as You Are Social (CAYA) support group

The Come as You Are social support network series, is for students and staff at Murdoch who have lived experience with disabilities, are neurodivergent and/or live with chronic illness. The social group runs on the last week of each month from February to October, alternating each month between afternoon tea or morning tea.

CAYA started in 2025, with the aim to create a safe space for those who have lived experience with Disability, Neurodiversity and/or Chronic Illness, and to help build more community spaces for those with similar experiences. The support group is called Come as You Are as it means you can show up exactly how you are where there is no need to change anything about yourself and be present in a way that feels natural to you. Due to the success and the positive responses of the 2025 morning/afternoon tea series, CAYA will continue to run in 2026 for the Months: Feb – Oct.

Who runs CAYA

The office of the PVC EDI hosts the morning/afternoon tea series, which is run by the strategic Projects Co-ordinator for disability, neurodiversity and chronic illness, and EDI Student Partner/s. Those who run the events also have lived experience with either disability, are neurodivergent and/or have chronic illness.
