We invite everyone to participate in the Community Ride for Safe Cycling, to demonstrate community support for better cycling infrastructure in Hobsons Bay. Cycling has many benefits for the health of our community: for air quality, reduced CO2 emissions, and safer, more pleasant streets. A bike friendly city is a people friendly city. Cycling is good for the climate, good for our physical health, cheap and accessible. Cycling infrastructure is not up to scratch in our municipality. Too many schools, supermarkets and other key locations are not connected by safe bike paths. Too many bike routes are not separated from vehicles or pedestrians. Stretches of path too often end abruptly, forcing cyclists into fast moving motor vehicle traffic. There have been tragedies on our streets, and there will be more as long as cyclists are forced to co-exist with heavy car and truck traffic. Painted-on stencils of bikes are not a substitute for proper protected paths and lanes. Bike paths should be safe and suitable not only for experienced, hardened commuters, but for people of all ages and abilities. We want to be comfortable getting our kids off their screens and out riding. We want food delivery riders to be safe while working. The City’s bike strategy is a decent start, but to achieve the vision of a safe, connected city we need to keep up the pressure and push for real, ongoing consultation. Cyclists and cycling organisations should be involved in decision-making about what is built, to ensure money for improving infrastructure goes to where it’s most needed. Local cycling advocates and councillors will highlight several danger spots as we ride past and talk about the issues and challenges.
Our goals:
*A more connected network of cycle paths throughout the city so you can get from anywhere to everywhere
*Safe bike paths for people of all ages and abilities (AAA) to and from schools, shops, stations and sporting facilities (SSSS) in the municipality
*Separation of bike traffic from fast moving vehicles and pedestrians.
*Creation of a genuine consultative committee of residents to be involved in short and long term planning and feedback (not just check-the-box forums).
