Event description
Join our Community Birding Group!
Please join us on our next monthly birdwalk on Saturday 12 July at 8-10am - a fun winter birding exploration of the lovely Randwick Environment Park. The easy loop walk includes bush and wetland, grassy areas and permaculture patches, providing a range of habitats reflected in high bird diversity, including many small birds which are missing from our surrounding suburbs. Sometimes we are even able to see tiny birds very closely, as they are so used to people passing by. The wetland is currently very full and shimmering in the sunlight, we often see different duck species, Ibises and Coots, and tiny Grebes disappearing as they dive to hunt, then bobbing up. Occasionally a bird of prey passes over, with other birds giving warning calls or flocks rising up dramatically.
In July you will be guided by expert birder Graeme Robinson, who for 16 years has been coordinating the Centennial Park surveys for Birding NSW, and has been involved in several long-term monitoring and habitat planting projects for decades in inland NSW. Graeme can help you with bird identification tips and together you can record the species observed and any exciting behaviours. We also contribute to citizen science by adding our sightings to Birdata, the national database of BirdLife Australia, and this can help conservation.
We usually stop to share ideas and special birding moments over morning tea - feel free to bring something yummy to share, and if you enjoy photography please bring your camera as some of the group have shared excellent photos from the birdwalks.
