Event description

We're very excited to invite you to join us for our Community Citizen Science Day!

What is Citizen Science? (I can hear you asking!)

Well... Citizen Science projects are an opportunity for non-scientists and everyday people to participate in scientific research. It involves making observations in nature, and recording information about what you see. It’s also an engaging way to connect with nature, to learn more about your local ecosystems and to participate in a fun community activity. What's not to love!?

Why are you focussing on native pollinators?

Did you know many native plant species can only be pollinated by native bees? Both indigenous plants and pollinators are such an important part of our urban biodiversity and we want to encourage them as much as possible.

What will be happening for this Citizen Science project?

We will be meeting at the Jacana Wetlands to do a few things...

  • Create and install bee hotels in 3 locations - ready to observe native pollinators at work!
  • Learn how to use the iNaturalist app to record your observations about native pollinators (or any other birds, frogs and insects) you notice
  • Eat a delicious morning tea and enjoy each other's company after months of lockdown (hooray!)
  • If you wish to, go for a walk we have mapped out with specific locations for observing wildlife
  • We will also be giving away native plants for you to take home and nourish biodiversity in your own garden at home (with thanks to Hume City Council)

It's going to be a lovely day and fairly intimate as we will cap numbers in strict adherence with covid-19 restrictions - please only register if you are committed to attend.

Please email Taryn with any queries and dietary requirements.
