Event description

Continuing our LAB Professional Development series, arts producer Naomi Velaphi will be leading a seminar on community engagement within her practice. In this session, she will focus on her independent practice, in particular two projects which have expanded her practice with artists and practice in Africa. The first is a producers' lab which Naomi co-facilitated as a part of the Pan African Creative Exchange, and the second is an exhibition she is co-curating (opening in late June) with artist Roberta Rich around re-imagining archives and histories with artists from southern Africa and the diaspora. Both these projects have happened across borders, amongst Covid, and Naomi hopes to share the contexts, challenges and learnings from these projects.

Naomi is an arts producer born on Whadjuk Noongar country, residing in Naarm (Melbourne). She strives to nurture artists' work and practices exploring alternative narratives, radical thought and deep connection. Centered on producing the work of contemporary, diverse and interdisciplinary artists her experience spans working for and amongst galleries, festivals and performance spaces. She is currently Senior Producer at Next Wave and has also held producing roles for a number of arts institutions including APAM, Arts House, Arts Centre Melbourne, The Abbotsford Convent and Koorie Heritage Trust. Through her independent practice she aims to unearth honest and generous collaborations between artists, producers, curators and presenters and create pathways for new work creation. Her curatorial interests are derived through her experiences as a woman of african and asian identities and the communities she represents. She holds a Masters of Arts and Cultural Management from the University of Melbourne and is a part of the Australia Council Arts Leadership Program 2020.

Thursday 28 APR, 1.00pm-3.00pm. Tickets $10 + BF.
