    Event description

Join us for a heartwarming evening at The Rees Hotel for our Community Garden Movie Night. As our garden rests during the winter, it’s the perfect time to gather and be inspired by three incredible permaculture films: "The City Food Commons," "Together We Grow," and "Growing Wild Together."

Relax with a complimentary cup of tea or hot chocolate and enjoy these inspiring documentaries from Happen Films, featuring stories of community gardening in New Zealand. From Christchurch’s urban food forest to Wellington’s Common Unity hub, and Riverton’s nearly 30-year-old food forest, these films will spark ideas and inspiration for anyone curious about permaculture in their community.

    About the Films:
    "The City Food Commons"
The City Food Commons shares the story of Roimata Food Commons, an urban food forest initiative driven by ÅŒtautahi Christchurch local Michael Reynolds. The aim of the project is to empower the community to co-create space in a public park, reviving the notion of the Commons, which was once so common in societies around the world.

    "Together We Grow"
What do you get when you combine a community cafe, a community grocer and a community bike works? Plus a repair cafe, a sewing workshop, garden sharing, and a honey-making enterprise? Common Unity! A truly wonderful example of the importance of the community in tackling issues like social isolation and food insecurity. And in building the social connections and social relationships so important to health and life.

    "Growing Wild Together"
In Growing Wild Together we return to the nearly 30-year-old food forest growing on 2 acres of urban land in the very south of Aotearoa New Zealand. The forest, previously an abandoned section filled with rubbish and burnt house remains, was the subject of our 2016 film An Invitation for Wildness. Now we’ve returned to find out what has changed in the forest and for the people who live there.
