Help Restore the Swan River: Community Planting Day at Mandoon Moitch

After another long, dry summer in Perth, our local landscapes need urgent care. Join us at Mandoon Moitch (Guildford Meadows) to take direct action against climate change and help restore the beautiful floodplain of the Derbal Yerrigan (Swan River).

The Mission: Reclaiming a Vital Wetland

Since 2016, we have planted over 100,000 trees at Mandoon Moitch to revive this significant remnant wetland. Once a thriving Eucalyptus rudis (Moitch/Flooded Gum) woodland, the area was largely cleared for grazing in the 1930s. Today, as part of Whiteman Park, it serves as both a registered Noongar cultural site and a critical sanctuary for at-risk wildlife.

Why your help matters:

• Restore Habitat: Help us rebuild the wetland vegetation that supports a vast and diverse of range of threatened fauna including, the endangered Carnaby’s Black Cockatoo, Forest Red-tailed Black Cockatoo, and the Rakali (native water rat).

• Plant Key Species: We will be planting Moitch (which provides essential nesting hollows), Koorlee (a vital food source for cockatoos), Boorarup, and Mohan.

• Climate and Ecological Resilience: Contribute to nature-based solutions that improve biodiversity and ecological health within our urban environment.

• Community Connection: Enjoy a rewarding, physical day outdoors meeting fellow nature lovers and learning about our unique local ecosystem.

Every task directly supports the survival and success of native plantings and helps create healthier habitats for wildlife.

Event Details

• Location: Guildford Meadows, entry opposite Lilac Hill Park, West Swan Road, Caversham, 6055.

• Date: 13 June 2026

• Time: Please arrive by 8.45am for a 9:00am start. We expect to finish by approximately 12pm.

• Parking: Please utilise the available onsite parking both at Guildford Meadows and Lilac Hill across the road.

• Meeting spot: Please remain in the carpark and look out for our staff and volunteers in green shirts and/or hi-vis vests.

• Cost: Free

What to Bring & Wear

• Gardening gloves (optional but recommended)

• A refillable water bottle

• Hat and sunglasses

• Sturdy footwear – sneakers or boots are recommended. Gum boots if its raining!

• Suitable outdoor wear

• Raincoat or waterproof jacket

• Sunscreen

• Snacks

This is a Reusable Friendly Event in line with our ethos to protect and restore the planet, we kindly ask that attendees avoid bringing disposable items where possible.

What We Provide

• All necessary equipment and plants

• Drinking water

• Sunscreen and insect repellent

• Expert guidance from our Restoration Manager

• Support from our experienced and knowledgeable volunteers  

• Morning tea

Please note: A moderate level of fitness is recommended. Participants will be required to walk a short distance on uneven grassy terrain to reach the planting site.
