Help restore native trees and wildlife habitat along the banks of the Rous River in the beautiful Tweed Valley.

3.2 hectares of Kynnumboon is being regenerated with more than 12,000 native trees, shrubs and groundcovers to grow the rainforest and bring back a variety of fauna, especially the flying-fox.

The free community event includes guided tours of the revegetation site, an indigenous welcome to country, and food and drink cart.

About Kynnumboon

Beverley Fairley’s family has owned a farm on the Rous River at Kynnumboon near Murwillumbah since 1862 when her great grandfather Joshua Bray settled there. The river and its forest formed the backdrop to 3 generations of Beverley’s family.

In 2022 Kynnumboon was selected as the site for Council’s Bringing back flying-fox habitat to the Kynnumboon floodplain project, an 8-year project that involves planting 10,000 native trees, shrubs and groundcovers on ex-cane land to create rainforest and wetland habitat on the bank of the Rous River.

This project is part of the Flying-fox Habitat Restoration Program assisted by the New South Wales Government through its Environmental Trust in association with Local Government NSW.

Activities to enjoy

Planting and mulching | 9 am – 1.30 pm | Plants and mulch will be ready to go, and holes will be pre-dug on a few different locations across the property. We will supply equipment however to help us out we encourage you to bring gloves, shovel, mulch fork, good footwear, hat and bucket for planting and mulching.

Speech by Mayor Chris Cherry and landowner Beverely Fairley | 10.20 am - 10.30 am

Guided walks through the remnant riparian rainforest | 10.30 am - 1 pm | Enjoy a walking, sharing and learning experience through the forest with knowledgeable Council project officers.

Food and Drinks by Tram 88 | 9 am – 2 pm | Purchase some warm and tasty food, treats, coffee, tea and other drinks from locals Jodi and Rachael owners of TRAM 88 and enjoy as you picnic surrounded by stunning views.

What to bring

Gloves, shovel, mulch fork, good footwear, hat and bucket to help with the planting otherwise you can use ours.
Picnic blanket or chairs to enjoy the scenery while you rest and have refreshments.
