Skill Level: Suitable for all levels, previous experience with wheel throwing is required.

Age Limit: 16+ (with adult supervision) 

Session Size: Limited to 11 spaces.

Booking Details:

Thank you for expressing an interest in using artisan's ceramic space during one of our Community Sessions, we are excited to host you in our Melbourne Street Workshop! We hope you get a lot out of your time here and get to explore your creativity in a safe and inclusive space!

This self-paced Community Wheel Hire booking is for anyone with demonstrated experience with the pottery wheel - this includes practicing ceramicists and those who have completed artisan's Intro to Wheel Throwing class in the last two years.

Please follow this link to book into one of our Intro to Wheel Throwing classes if you'd like to book into an upcoming Community Wheel Hire session.

This booking includes:

  • 3 hours of space hire within artisan’s shared ceramic zone.
  • 1 pottery wheel per person booked (you will be able to choose your preferred wheel at time of booking).
  • Use of artisan's ceramic studio tools and equipment (please note: any tools sustaining damage must be reported to artisan staff and replaced).
  • Two height adjustable tables in the ceramic zone - for your own safety please request the assistance of artisan staff before adjusting the height of these tables.
  • Shared use of a cupboard to store your belongings.
  • Use of artisan's slab roller - please follow on-site instructions for use and cleaning.
  • Temporary storage of your finished works on artisan’s shared dedicated shelving.
    • Please note we don’t have an infinite amount of space however we can work with you to assess the volume of work being made and come to a suitable arrangement.
    • If your works are in progress and require finishing at a later date we recommend you bring your own drying sheets and a styrofoam box to store these works and safely transport them with you from the workshop.
  • Access to cleaning materials and equipment: water, buckets, sponges.
  • The total booking time includes set up, pack down and cleaning.

What to bring:

  • Clothes that can get messy or an apron (essential)
  • Old towel to place across your lap during wheel throwing (we highly recommend this)
  • Cleaning rags (we recommend microfibre cloths)
  • Medium sized bucket with airtight lid (to collect any clay scraps)
  • Closed in shoes (essential)
  • Your favourite tools
  • Your imagination and willingness to learn and make in a shared space
  • Materials*

* You are encouraged to supply your own materials. If you would like to use artisan’s kiln firing service please ensure clay used is earthenware mid-fire, cone 6. You are welcome to purchase quantities of earthenware clay through artisan at $30 per 10kg bag. Please let us know if you require more than 2 bags of clay so we can ensure we have the required quantities available. Payment can be made via Square at the workshop.

Extra Services Pricing Structure:

Artisan is able to provide kiln and glaze firing services at the costs outlined below. The fee includes the services of an experienced kiln technician to pack, fire and unpack the works.

Kiln Firing:

  • We fire to bisque temperatures at 1040’C
  • Cost of a bisque fire is calculated at $12/kg for fired works
  • Bisque fired works are weighed on site post-firing
  • Payment can be made in person via Square before collecting works
  • We can fire to a Stoneware temperature at 1260’C with prior arrangement. This would involve booking out the artisan kiln for a full load cost of $250. This includes packing, firing and unpacking the works by artisan’s kiln technician.

Glazing:

  • We fire to earthenware temperatures at 1100‘C (mid-fire, Cone 6).
  • If you’d like to use artisan glazes and a second firing service, this is priced at $20/kg. 
  • If you are using your own commercial earthenware glazes and would like to use artisan’s kiln firing service for a second fire, this is priced at $12/kg.
    • Please note, these glazes must be food-safe and lead-free. 
  • All glazed works are weighed on site post-firing.
  • Payment can be made in person via Square before collecting works.

Glazing Terms & Conditions:

  • The base and 5mm upwards from the base of each clay item must be clean from glaze.
  • Please photograph your items and have your initials or maker's mark stamped to the underside of each item.
  • Please provide a filled out glazing form per work or series of works with the same glazes/materials for our kiln firing technician (available on site). 
  • Details required:
    • Clay body used
    • Glazes used (brand, colour, firing range)
    • Brief description and/or sketch of your work
  • Please note, artisan does not accept responsibility for the loss or damage of items and reserves the right to refuse any items which we feel may cause issues during the firing process.


Storage of Work:

  • Artisan has limited on-site storage, please discuss with staff onsite if large volumes of works are required to be fired or stored post-firing for longer than 2 weeks.
  • After the works are glazed and fired, they will be placed in the collection zone within the workshop. Artisan staff will let you know via the email provided when the works have been fired and are ready to be picked up - we recommend picking items up within two weeks of being notified.
  • Please note: As we have a busy ceramics schedule and limited space, all work left at artisan longer than 2 months will become the property of artisan and/or disposed of.

Safety, Conduct & Cleaning:

  • The workshop space is a bustling community hub, we ask that noise levels be kept to a reasonable amount to not interfere with other workshop activities running at the same time.
  • We ask that you treat artisan staff, visitors, facilitators, workshop attendees and fellow community wheel hire attendees with politeness and respect. 
  • Please ensure safe practices are followed when using the pottery wheels and the space is used in a respectful manner. 
  • Please follow good housekeeping practices ensuring the floor surface is kept clear of materials, tools, furniture and personal possessions, especially in thoroughfares.
  • Please follow onsite cleaning instructions to ensure the wheel, surrounding area and table surfaces used are reset and ready for use across artisan's workshops. Any further cleaning required by artisan staff will incur a $50 cleaning fee payable before your next booking.
  • Any damage is to be reported to artisan staff at time of booking to be rectified and replacement costs settled.
  • The pottery wheels are not suitable for use by minors under 16 years of age. Minors aged between 16-17 must be supervised by a paying adult.

Parking/Transport Information:

  • There is ample available street parking on surrounding streets, such as Manning, Edmondstone and Cordelia.
  • Undercover paid parking within a 5 minute walk includes SW1 carpark on Cordelia Street, West Village Carpark and the Convention Centre. 
  • Alternatively, Melbourne Street bus stop 4 is directly out the front of the entrance. Buses 192, 196, 199 and N199. 

Event Cancellation Policy:

Please note this event can be cancelled by artisan due to unforeseen circumstances or if minimum numbers are not reached. In this event participants will be refunded accordingly and as soon as possible.

Participant Cancellation Policy:

Bookings cancelled up to one week prior to the start of the workshop may be refunded in full. Tickets cancelled under 1 week are unable to be refunded.

Workshop Transfer Policy:

You are welcome to transfer your booking to another person prior to the booking commencing, please confirm this arrangement in writing to workshop@artisan.org.au.

COVID-Safe Policy:

Please be assured artisan has well considered COVID-safe protocols regarding our workshop programming. You will be offered socially distanced seating, access to your own PPE sanitation options at your workspace, and a large extremely well-ventilated workshop venue.
