Description

Competition in Service of the Child

In this presentation, Patrick explores how competition can be aligned with Montessori principles and child development. Rather than viewing competition solely as winning against others, it reframes competition as "striving together" and pursuing personal growth. Across the four planes of development, the role of competition changes:

  • 0–6 years: Focus on self-mastery, confidence, and independence; avoid adult-imposed competition.

  • 6–12 years: Competition can support fairness, sportsmanship, and social development when embedded in collaboration and community.

  • 12–18 years: Healthy competition helps build self-esteem, belonging, and resilience when centred on the individual rather than results.

  • 18–24 years: Competition becomes a tool for self-awareness, purpose, and leadership.

The key takeaway is that competition is not inherently good or bad. When guided by Montessori principles, it can support personal growth, character development, and a lifelong love of sport by emphasising self-improvement over comparison with others.
