Compliance Training Workshop for Providers delivering high-risk Access Trades, Cranes & Scaffolding training

We invite providers that deliver training for high-risk access trades, cranes and scaffolding to attend this workshop to learn about our report findings and help us understand solutions that will support what industry needs.

Different work activities within the construction and access trades industries can require different levels of training and instruction. Cranes, scaffolding, working at heights, elevated work platforms and wheels, and tracks & rollers are examples. These activities require a high level of training for workers and others on the worksite to remain healthy and safe. Many people in the construction and access trades have low literacy and numeracy. There has also been an increase in immigrants joining the industry for whom English is a second language. Training should be tailored and fit for purpose – it should not be a tick-in-the-box exercise.

Currently, several high-risk and high-credit-value unit standards are being delivered via short courses where the length of training and the competency requirements of a standard are not aligned. Where this type of short-timeframe training occurs, the critical question is: On completion, do the participants have adequate knowledge to avoid causing harm to themselves or others?

At Waihanga Ara Rau, we have been exploring this question through a range of activities, such as post-assessment and pre-assessment moderation and site visits, and we’re collating what we’ve found into a report.
