Composition of Landscape

Event description

Whether you're a novice or someone with more experience, I'll meet you where you're at and we'll enjoy two full days together, diving deep into what makes a good composition and learning how this enables us to create stronger landscape paintings.

During the workshop students will create a landscape painting based on their own reference (or mine if you prefer).

Whilst we are creating a painting, the focus will be on composition and how each step of the process can support and strengthen our initial concept (or not!).

The workshop is suitable for both Oil and Acrylic Painters - all levels.  Beginners are welcome, though if you haven't ever painted it may be better to start with one of my other workshops.  Contact me if you're not sure.

Please note this is not a workshop where you follow along and we all do the same painting!

No!  It is intended that the workshop be an individual learning experience for everyone.

By applying what you learn to your own images I believe you will be more likely to take home skills you can readily apply to your own work, because you already have!

Here's a quick look at what the two days will look like...

Day 1 will begin with a close look at the principles of composition, what makes a great composition and what doesn't.  Students will spend time creating their own compositions by applying what they've learnt and using their own images (or mine).   We will work together to ensure everyone has a strong design to work from.  The design with then be transferred to canvas and a grisaille (tonal underpainting) painted.  By the end of the day students will have a good grasp of the concepts and have a painting started using their own design.

Day 2 will continue with the painting process. Our emphasis will be to understand how individual elements of painting (ie brushwork, tone, colour, edges etc) can support our initial design and lead to a strong painting.

Throughout the two days I will be demonstrating and sharing many tips, tricks and insights from my own art practise as well as a few exercises to further enhance learning.

In particular, as a professional I'm passionate about safe studio practise and creating paintings that will stand the test of time.

I focus my teaching on best practise and if you are using oil paint please know there is absolutely no need for oil painting to be the smelly, turpsy experience of the past!

Developing good habits has the added benefit of making your art journey so much more enjoyable and also lead to higher satisfaction.

So come along and join me as I demonstrate the 'how', explain the 'why' and assist you to make your own beautiful painting.  By the end of our time together you will have a solid foundation to work from and, it is my hope, that I will have managed in some small way to inspire you to continue moving forward with your own explorations in paint of our amazingly beautiful landscape.
