Compost Making Workshop

Event description

Declan Ramsay-Malone is a certified laboratory technician, composting expert, and soon to be certified soil biology consultant educated through Dr. Elaine Ingham’s Soil Food Web School. Declan has been a gardener his whole life, turning compost piles as soon as he could lift a pitchfork and has been studying soil biology for over three years, honing his craft to create highly biologically active compost and liquid amendments. He has worked with Alexandre Farms, one of the largest certified regenerative dairy farms in the US, and the Del Norte Permaculture Guild teaching the values of soil biology and the creation of high-quality compost.

This hands-on workshop will focus on the creation of biologically active thermophilic compost and compost extract, a valuable liquid amendment. Together we will build a compost windrow and discuss how each input feeds different organisms of the soil food web, how those organisms play an irreplaceable role in plant health, and the best ways to introduce these organisms into your garden or farm. Using a compost pile Declan has already completed at Birdland Organics as an example, we will create compost extract and look through his microscope to see the microbiology at work firsthand.
