Concrete Sea + Masculin Feminine
Event description
Concrete Sea is an initial offering of three songwriters Nick Elias, Cody Munro Moore and Rohan Wilcox who are best-known for their contributions to Sydney bands, Big White, New Lovers, The Money Go Round and Wallspace.
‘Hotel in Thirroul’ is a song about Brett Whitely’s life and subsequent death. Singer and lyricist Nick Elias explains that ‘the song is a simple portrait. It is not a fan piece.’
Elias explains further: ‘I admire Brett’s work, but I also find it sensational at times. The song is not a critique and if anything adds to the mythologising. In a sense, he was an artist for the everyday Australian, and our upcoming album is about this - a kind of everyday experience.’
Rohan Wilcox who produced and co-engineered the record spoke of the patience he had in bringing it together: ‘we started out when the country was on fire and by the time we’d finished we were in lock down. However, the main challenge was putting a record together that did the songs justice. I wanted the record to sound unmistakably Australian.’
