Confident City Riders: Cycling Skills Course

IMPORTANT: THIS BICYCLE SKILLS COURSE IS FOR WOMEN AND GIRLS ONLY (15 YRS PLUS) 

Improve your bike safety and build confidence when cycling in the city.

Are you keen to start commuting by bike to work or uni? Want to practice social distancing and avoid congestion? Maybe accompany your children to ride to school or even drop them off riding a cargo bike. Even shopping is easier when you travel there by bike.

This course will start in an off-road environment, covering some basic road theory and teaching bike skills to establish good habits and learn essential principles to manage risk when cycling in the city. Learn about Sydney’s cycleways, the bike network, and quiet streets.

Part 1

Part 1 of the bike training takes place in a traffic-free area, where you will refine your bike control skills and discuss road rules and on-road scenarios. You will then take part in a ride on the local roads to put what you’ve learned into practise.

This session is for you if you can ride a bike and would like to boost your confidence or refresh your knowledge and skills when riding a bike in traffic.

Part 2

Refresh your control skills and learn techniques for effective braking, changing gears, and signalling before heading out on some quiet streets.

Under guidance and support, you will get to practise lane positioning and experience first-hand what makes for great route selection when navigating your way around North Sydney and beyond.

What to bring

• a bike in good working order
• a helmet
• water and snacks
• raingear if it looks like light rain
• a light jacket if it's cold.

Wet weather

The instructors will make the decision at around 7am on the day of the program and will contact you by email or phone. As a rough guide, we will run the course in light sprinkles and cancel for dangerous weather.
