Get involved in LELAN's December Letters Project and bring messages of hope and solidarity to those who are spending the holidays in mental health wards.

This December LELAN invites you to join us in writing messages of support that will be delivered to people who are spending the holidays in mental health wards across SA. These anonymous messages provide support and connection for people in a situation that can often feel isolating and lonely.

We aim to let people experiencing a mental health crisis know that someone cares and is thinking about them during this often difficult time.

The original December Letters Project was started by ‘Madwomen in the Attic’, an organisation advocating for social change in the USA. The project uses the analogy of the Owls which deliver ‘The Letters from No One’ in the first chapter of Harry Potter.

How to be involved:

Join us at WOTSO Workspace (223 Flinders St Adelaide) on Tuesday December 5th from 2pm-5pm for card making and/or writing, or, due to popular demand based on when we have run this event in the past, we also have a second date of Thursday December 14th from 9:30am-12:30pm.

We also invite you to post or drop off handwritten cards that you wish to contribute. Donations of cards, envelopes and other materials would be very much appreciated. Email tanya@lelan.org.au for more information and/or let her know you want to be involved.

LELAN is the independent peak body in South Australia by, for and with people with lived experience of mental distress, social issues or injustice. Our purpose is to amplify the voice, influence and leadership of people with lived experience to drive systemic change. LELAN has led philanthropic, state and federally funded projects as well as completed commissioned and fee-for-service pieces of work.

By centering the experiences, collective insights and solution ideas of people with lived experience in all of our work, as well as being immersed in the lived experience community from grassroots to strategic levels, LELAN demonstrates the principles, practices and change dynamics that the social sector is calling for and desperately needs. Because of our strong and trusted relationships with people in the lived experience community we are able to have deeper conversations about things that matter, drawing our collective experiences and action together in purposeful ways.

LELAN has extensive experience and a proven methodology for leading lived experience-led and/or co-creation initiatives, frequently with a focus on sensitive issues and including groups that bring divergent perspectives to the conversation.

The organisation has three areas of focus:

Developing the capability and influence of people with lived experience.
Nurturing organisational and sector capacity for partnering with people with lived experience.
Impacting system improvement agendas to benefit people with lived experience.

This includes the pivotal Model of Lived Experience Leadership and Roadmap for Strengthening Lived Experience Leadership for Transformative Systems Change in South Australia, as well as the Lived Experience Governance Framework and
Lived Experience Governance Toolkit launched in mid-2023.
