Event description

In Contact Improvisation (CI) we move in near constant physical contact creating a dance together in the moment. From that simple instruction all manner of good things flow, as you learn to master tone, speed, awareness, inspiration, attention, emotion, weight sharing, and specific movements such as rolling, sliding, lifting and spiraling.

It is a study of connection- to each other, to ourselves and to the radical honesty of living in the moment, and being seen by another, as you too are witness.

It is a conversation between vibrant and expansive persons, welcoming of all that is easy, and all that is difficult. The dance challenges and delights in equal measure.

Held in the warm and accepting community of CI, through the dance your body engages to create a physical framework for personal development, and serves to illuminate aspects of self and inviting them to change for the better.

Cost:

The guiding ethics for this event are around community, affordability and encouraging growth of skills.

It is pay-as-you-will; it really is up to you in terms of how much you can afford, how much you get out of the event and your own relationship to money.

As a guide, about $15 is fine.

-----

* Please Note

Please bring comfortable clothes to dance in. It's best to avoid wearing jewellery as well as it can get in the way of the dance.

Learning CI is a very personal journey, and so whatever you need to feel comfortable in the space is welcome. So for example stepping out from certain exercises, choosing who you dance with or even simply watching for the whole time is all just fine.

About the facilitator, Eamonn O'Flaherty

I discovered Contact Improv in early 2010 and it became the center of my life, attending as many classes in Sydney as I could for two years before also pursuing other related forms of dance, movement, expression and martial arts.

I was promoting the form from my very first encounter of it, and began teaching towards the end of 2012.

It is my goal to spread and promote this most beloved dance form as much as I am able.

Contact Culture

This event is run under the Not-For-Profit organisation Contact Culture, which is dedicated to spreading ‘Dance and Democracy’. It is offered with the ethic of not letting an aspiring attendee’s lack of money lead to a lack of dance.

If you'd like to attend but the cost prohibits that, please get in touch and we can discuss it.
