The contraceptive implant offers the convenience of highly effective contraceptive protection for three years. The insertion and removal techniques are easy to learn, but to minimise possible complications it is important that they are done correctly.

The SHQ contraceptive implant theory workshop lays the foundations to become skilled in providing contraceptive implant services. To become a competent inserter after completion of the workshop, several insertions and removals should be performed under supervision by a competent inserter, ideally within the health professional’s own workplace.

Each workshop can last up to 2.5 hours depending on attendance numbers.

Issues to cover during counselling about contraceptive implant use.
Benefits, risks and contraindications to use of contraceptive implants .
Insertion and removal techniques, including practice insertions and removals with simulation arms.

Entry Requirements / Eligibility:

Nurses must have attended Modules 6 & 7 Contraception and Communication of the Certificate in Sexual and Reproductive Health (nursing) or equivalent to attend this workshop. Some Nurse Practitioners may be considered for RPL, please contact Karen Bonte Nurse Educator to discuss your eligibility.

Nurses can enrol if they have completed modules 6 and 7 of the Certificate in Sexual and Reproductive health (Nursing) or equivalent.
