Conversation with a Showgirl - with Imogen Kelly

Australian Burlesque has a long and oft hidden history. From it's revival in the 90s, through the advent of social media, and surviving a pandemic, Imogen Kelly has been at the forefront of the scene and a leader in the movement. 

Join us as we hear from Imogen as they share their extraordinary experiences and their personal history of the resurgence of burlesque from the 90s to now. Imogen will recount stories and share tales of their time dancing in Sydney clubs and watching the popularity of burlesque grow. Imogen will also answer questions from attendees about the history of Australian burlesque.

About Imogen Kelly

Notoriously known as Australia’s Queen of Burlesque, and more famously as a crowned World Queen of Burlesque, Miss Exotic World 2012 at The Burlesque Hall of Fame in Las Vegas. From chorus lines and Moulin Rouge styled cavalcades, through to gypsy circuses, Imogen’s theatrics continue to dazzle and amaze.

With a performing, producing and directing career spanning 30 years, Imogen has transformed the performance landscape of Australia not only with their innovative approach to theatre and cabaret, but also for changing laws and advocating for strippers/ SWer’s rights. Originally hailing from the underground queer scene in Sydney and an original Kings Cross showgirl, these days you are more likely to see Imogen perform with Sydney Symphony Orchestra and at The Sydney Opera House.

With a BFA (College of Fine arts) Major in Performance, a Circus diploma (ZACA UK) and a Masters in Theatre Directing (National Institute of Dramatic Arts) Imogen's work extends beyond the theatrical norm. 

Imogen Kelly is a true pioneer and continues to set the world ablaze with their provocative whoopee.

Workshop details

This workshop is theoretical and will be held at Society City Wollongong, a cafe style venue. Food and drinks will be available to purchase. The workshop will occur in a reserved part of the venue that will otherwise be open to the public. Some projections and historical items may be shown. Please take care with any physical items and ask permission before holding, using or photographing personal and historical items.

Cost $50 per person + booking fee
