Convivium - classics at Canterbury
Event description
Convivium – classics at Canterbury
When Canterbury College opened in 1873, Classics was considered a cornerstone of a good education and Latin was a required subject. As UC celebrates its 150th anniversary in 2023, we are also marking 150 years of classics being taught as a tertiary subject in Ōtautahi Christchurch.
This convivial event, curated especially for the Heritage Festival, will be comprised of four short talks exploring the lives and careers of four fascinating characters who influenced classical education at Canterbury – Francis Haslam, Hugh Stewart, Ernst Badian, and Miss Marion Steven. Quirky, complex and deeply dedicated to their discipline, these four scholars had a significant impact on generations of students at the University of Canterbury.
