Before we start the tour, respected Aboriginal elder Aunty Maxine Ryan from La Perouse will share her cultural knowledge, experiences and stories of the local coastal area.
Coogee to Lurline Bay Coastal walk & talk 8.45am - 10.45am
This is a very rare opportunity to join Australia’s leading coastal scientist, Professor Bruce Thom as he uncovers the secrets of Sydney’s coast as you stroll along the coastal walkway between Coogee Beach and Lurline Bay.
The tour starts at the internationally award winning Coogee Surf Lifesaving Club founded in 1907 and will take you along the popular eastern beaches Coastal Walkway to Ivor Rowe Rockpool. Be prepared to go off-track while learning about the geological wonders of the area and finding out about the relationship between Sydney’s beaches and Hawkesbury Sandstone and learning some fascinating social and environmental history on the way.
Meet outside Coogee Surf Life Saving Club at the south end of Coogee Beach. Wear covered walking shoes, bring a hat, water to drink and sunscreen. Maximum 20 people.
CONDITIONS OF BOOKING
- Minimum age 8 years
- Children under 16 must be accompanied by a parent or adult guardian
- Parents or adult guardians accompanying children need to pay.
Emeritus Professor Bruce Thom AM
Bruce Graham Thom AM is an Australian geoscientist and educator. He is a founding member of the Wentworth Group of Concerned Scientists, Emeritus Professor at the University of Sydney in Australia and founding President of the Australian Coastal Society.

Do not attend this activity if they have any of the following:
- Close contact with a confirmed COVID-19 case in the past 14 days
- COVID-19 symptoms: fever or acute respiratory infection (e.g. shortness of breath or cough) with or without fever.
Photographs, videos and voice recordings
Randwick City Council staff may on occasion take recordings of participants during activities (including photographs, videos and voice recordings) that could be used for the following purposes:
- educational or community information purpose
- Council displays and promotions of community education events
- to complement the promotion of Randwick's Marine and Coastal Program.
If you DO NOT wish for the participant’s recording to be used according to these conditions, please indicate this during the booking process.
Cancellation conditions
This activity may be cancelled due to insufficient bookings, NSW COVID-19 health orders or poor weather. Participants will be advised in the event the activity changes or cancellation occurs. All care has been made in the preparation of the 2022 Marine and Coastal Discovery Program but some changes may occur due to circumstances beyond the control of Randwick City Council. Refunds will be provided for paid activities in the event of cancellation by Council.
