Description

OzHarvest’s Cooking for a Cause Social is a hands-on cooking class with purpose. Guided by OzHarvest chefs, you’ll learn clever ways to reduce food waste and build practical cooking skills you can take straight back to your own kitchen.

Together, you’ll put those skills into action, transforming rescued ingredients into nutritious meals for people doing it tough. Once you've packaged up the meals, our drivers deliver them to charities across Sydney and our free OzHarvest Market in Waterloo, supporting people experiencing food insecurity.

You’ll get to taste everything you make (yum), plus there’s no washing up. 🙌

Come solo and meet new people, or bring your friends and family and cook together. Either way, you’ll leave having learnt something new, made a real contribution and had a great time doing it!

FAQs

  • Can you accommodate my dietaries?

We can accommodate allergies, and we'll do our best to cook a range of recipes that work across different dietary needs. Just keep in mind the main purpose of the session is cooking meals for people experiencing food insecurity, so recipes are planned with that first.

  • What happens to the food we cook?

Everything gets packaged and labelled (with your help!), then delivered to charities across Sydney the next day to support people experiencing food insecurity. You'll also get to taste what you make on the night.

  • What should I wear?
    • Comfortable, closed-toe shoes

    • Hair tied back

    • Jewelry removed (recommended)

  • What's the minimum age?

    This session is 18+.

  • What's included?

Everything - all ingredients, equipment, and instructions are provided. Just bring yourself.

  • Can I come on my own?

Yes! There's no minimum booking size - come solo, with a partner, or bring a few friends. Plenty of people book solo and leave having made new friends.

  • Is it accessible?

The warehouse itself is wheelchair accessible. The kitchen area is a standing space with high benches - we can't have chairs in there for safety reasons, but if you need to sit down or take a break, you're welcome and encouraged to step outside as needed.

  • Will we get a full meal?

Not quite - it's a taste of what you've made. The goal of the session is to get as many meals as possible out to people who need them, so most of what you cook heads straight out the door rather than onto your plate.
