Event description

With our summers getting hotter and more difficult to navigate, it's more important than ever that we find ways to cool down our streets so that all of us can go about our lives and get around our suburbs without feeling overwhelmed by the heat.

This 'cool walk' around Parramatta will allow you to learn more about how urban heat is exacerbated in western Sydney suburbs. Western Sydney can experience temperatures up to 10°C hotter than other parts of the city due to its geography and the effects of the urban heat island. During this interactive walking tour, we will be mapping the 'hot spots' that you want to see changed and the 'cool spots' you'd like to see more of. We will also do some temperature monitoring to see the urban heat island at play.

The walk will take no longer than 30 minutes and we will treat you to a cool drink afterwards, where we we can chat about what we found surprising about the walk. We will be walking slowly and will take as many breaks as needed.

The event is hosted by Sweltering Cities, a registered health charity that works with communities most impacted by extreme heat to advocate for more liveable, equitable, and sustainable cities. If you have any questions, or would like to discuss any accessibility needs, please get in touch with us at sanaa@swelteringcities.org
