Karawatha Forest Guided Bushwalk with Dr Richard Noske: ACF Brisbane South & Logan
Event description
Join Dr Richard Noske and the Australian Conservation Foundation Brisbane South & Logan for a guided bushwalk in Karawatha Forest, along the Rocks Circuit (with another shorter walk).
Karawatha Forest is approximately 1000 hectares of bushland and coastal lowlands on the southern edge of Brisbane City on the Logan City boundary.
As well as having the highest diversity of frog species in Brisbane, Karawatha Forest is home to wallabies and kangaroos. Hollows in older eucalypt trees are habitat and nesting places for a large number of species including gliders, possums, bats, parrots and owls. The reserve has nearly 120 bird species, making it a great place to go birdwatching.
In 1991 the Karawatha Forest Protection Society was formed in response to the groundswell of public opinion which wanted to see the forest saved from development. The Brisbane City Council introduced a Bushland Levy in the same year which made the purchase and protection of the forest possible. The State Government also made valuable contributions to the size of the forest.
Because of its strategic importance, Council has dedicated some adjoining lands to become part of Karawatha Forest. The Forest will be further enhanced through the protection of natural corridors and addition of land through the Bushland Levy.
