Being Trauma–Informed in Practice | In-person Murihiku workshop - October 2024

This full day in-person workshop, facilitated by Dr. Nicola Atwool, will help participants develop a stronger understanding of trauma-informed practice.  The workshop will provide a combination of information sharing and small group activities to allow a focus on implications for participants’ own practice.  An online follow-up 1.5 hour session, will take place after the in-person workshop (date/time TBC with group), and will begin with feedback from participants about their experience of implementing trauma-informed practice.  Challenges and barriers will be discussed and participants will have the opportunity to develop strategies to support implementation.

Workshop Outline:

Facilitator:

Dr. Nicola Atwool is a former Associate Professor in the Social and Community Work Programme at the University of Otago.

Nicola has professional qualifications in social work and child psychotherapy. During her career she has worked for what is now Oranga Tamariki and as principal advisor for the Office of the Children’s Commissioner.

She completed a PhD in 2008 exploring the use of attachment assessments in decision-making for children in care.

Nicola sees the goal of her research as to influence policy and practice to improve outcomes for children and young people exposed to adversity. Her extensive practitioner experience enables her to bridge the worlds of academia, policy and practice.
