The Truffle Boils is one of Sydney’s unjustly obscure jazz treasures. The quartet of virtuosi has cohered into an intensely passionate, fiercely swinging unit, mixing some band originals with rarely heard classics from legendary immortals like Marion Brown, Ellington, Mingus and others.

Featuring the alto sax/trumpet magic of Peter Farrar & Tom Avgenicos, and the rhythm/bass engine room of Jodie Michael and Sam Dobson.

Laura Altman & Cass Pyc

Laura Altman (Gadigal/Wangal country, Sydney) is a clarinetist, improviser, composer and song-writer whose musical output reaches across exploratory, contemporary classical, and folk-adjacent music scenes. She has a rich solo practice which centres on an intuitive approach to the clarinet, underpinned by a curiosity with resonance and feedback.

Cass Pyc (Dharawal country, Wollongong) is a guitarist whose practice involves utilising preparations to draw complex rhythms, and resonances from the instrument. His improvising experience spans prog metal riffage to avant minimalism.

This is Cass and Laura’s debut performance as a duo.

Mind on Fire with Phillippa Murphy-Haste

Mind On Fire is a Sydney-based project formed by brothers Brad and Sam Gill. Since forming in 2017, they have developed a unique approach to blending improvisation and experimental composition, amassing a substantial body of work for duo and expanded formations with esteemed collaborating performers. For this performance, they’ll be appearing with Phillippa Murphy-Haste.

Since forming in 2017, Mind On Fire have released three albums and an EP of original compositions and improvisations, including their most recent release “Still, Vol. 2” (Radial Sounds, 2022). They also recorded a performance for Phoenix Central Park’s video series that was released in 2020.
