UNSW Biological Resources Imaging Laboratory (BRIL)

The Biological Resources Imaging Lab (BRIL) is UNSW’s preclinical imaging facility and a Node of the National Imaging Facility (NIF), which provides researchers and industry partners with access to imaging instruments and expertise for translational research.

BRIL offers researchers a wide range of preclinical imaging capabilities to allow high-resolution imaging of live animals, clinical samples, fixed specimens and materials. Our staff can support projects from initial planning to data acquisition and analysis. Clinically relevant technologies such as MRI, PET-CT and ultrasound provide maximal clinical relevance, allowing quick bench-to-bedside technology transfer.

The facility is one of the best equipped of its kind in Australia, placing UNSW at the forefront of biomedical imaging. The extensive range of technologies and expertise can facilitate multimodal imaging within a single experiment. All instruments are located within a specific pathogen free PC2 animal facility, which allows our capabilities to expand to genetically modified and immunocompromised experimental models.

BRIL (Biomedical Research Imaging Laboratory) is a specialised research service offering advanced preclinical imaging for live animals, clinical samples, and materials. With modalities like MRI, PET-CT, and ultrasound, BRIL enables clinically relevant, multimodal imaging to accelerate bench-to-bedside research.

Based in a state-of-the-art PC2 facility, BRIL supports complex experimental models—including genetically modified and immunocompromised animals. Our expert team provides full project support, from study design to data analysis, making BRIL one of Australia’s leading biomedical imaging platforms.

We are part of the University of New South Wales, Mark Wainwright Analytical Centre (MWAC) facilities and services group. As part of MWAC we are providing support to not only UNSW staff and students, but also to researchers from other institutions, government and industry partners.
