What’s the Blended MHFA Community Course?

The Blended Online MHFA Community Course has been adapted from the Standard MHFA course for adults into a format consisting of two components, online 5-7 hours and face to face 4.5 hours. The training offers the same accreditation as the standard course.

Course Component 1 – Self-paced interactive eLearning (approx. 5 hours)

The eLearning course component presents an overview of mental health problems and mental health crises:

Mental illnesses: depression, anxiety, substance use disorders and psychosis.

Mental health crises: suicidal thoughts and behavior's, non-suicidal self-injury, traumatic events and aggressive behavior's.

Course Component 2 – Instructor-led face to face training from 10-3pm on March 2nd

An opportunity to revise content covered in the self-paced eLearning program and the development of practical skills in a group environment.

What's included?

Each participant will receive their own MHFA manual to keep. Upon completion of the training participants can complete a short assessment and if they pass they will become an accredited Mental Health First Aider for 3 years.

Community led Safe Space Inner West

We are delighted to offer Mental Health First Aid to the community so that we can grow the mental health IQ in our community to better support our friends, family, colleagues or anyone we meet in our daily lives. It increases participants' knowledge regarding mental health, decreases their negative attitudes, and increases supportive behaviours toward individuals with mental health problems.

Our goal for 2023 is to build the mental resilience in the community and help reduce the stigma associated with mental distress. We want to deliver bespoke, highly researched health and wellbeing events, because what we have found in our time operating the Safe Space is that when a person is accompanied by someone that is supporting them, it invites more meaningful and deep listening conversations which results in better outcomes for the guests.

We have received a grant from Inner West Council so we are able to run this court at a discounted rate. Normally $290 but now by donation or free.

Our Facilitator

Roisin Trainor

With a background in providing crisis support to vulnerable and migrant communities, Roisin understands how important it is to be appropriately trained and supported to respond when someone is in crisis. She has years of experience in improving the health and wellbeing of diverse populations across a range of settings including community organisations, schools and universities.

Roisin has a Masters degree in Health Promotion and Public Health and is a licensed Principal Master Instructor* of the Mental Health First Aid training program. MHFA training has been independently evaluated since it was first launched in 2000 and continues to show that it leads to:

improved knowledge of mental illness and their treatments
improved knowledge of how to support someone with a mental health concern
confidence to apply those skills.
