Event description

Intro to Home Electrics: A One-Day Beginner's Workshop

This one-day, theory-based workshop is designed to introduce you to the first principles of DIY electrics. You’ll learn how to demystify domestic electrical theory, understand basic ‘like for like’ replacements such as switches and socket plates, and gain a clearer understanding of how your home’s electrical systems work. While this course does not provide certification or authorisation for electrical work, it equips you with essential knowledge, tools, and safety guidance to help you make informed decisions and stay within legal DIY limits.

What You’ll Learn:

Understanding Home Electrics
  • How your home’s electrical system is wired

  • Key electrical terms and language to help you communicate with tradespeople

  • What you can and can’t legally do without certification

  • Practice how to wire a plug, switch and pendant light correctly

  • How to use hand tools for electrical tasks

  • How inline switches work

  • Understand how to change switches, when dimmers can be used, and how to change ceiling pendants

Safety and Testing
  • Electrical safety do’s and don’ts

  • How to identify and avoid faulty wiring

  • How your fuse board (consumer unit) works – and how to switch power off safely

The Science (Explained Simply)
  • Voltage, current, and resistance

Who is this for?

This course is ideal for anyone who wants to understand the basics of home electrics without the jargon.

Leave With Confidence

By the end of the day, you’ll have:

  • A clear understanding of how domestic electrics work

  • The knowledge to carry out minor, permitted tasks safely

  • Practical tips for saving energy and reducing your electricity bills

  • A stronger sense of what’s behind the walls – and what’s best left to the pros
