Free School for Farmworkers: Off-Season Realities

As we enter October, in many colder climate areas the promise of rest is upon us. Markets are having their countdowns, CSAs are winding down, the frost kill is getting closer. For many farmers, winter can be a time for reflection on this past season and crop planning for the next.

But REAL TALK, the reality for farmworkers is much different!

Many farms are seasonal or go down to a skeleton crew in the off-season, which means farmworkers face the annual uncertainty of how to get by until farms are hiring again in the spring. If housing is tied to the job, farmworkers may also experience housing insecurity on top of that. Farmworkers are presented with the task of looking for jobs and many find their winter wages at coffee shops, bars, fedex, amazon, bus driving and more. It’s a big challenge presented at the end of what is likely an exhausting season!!

If this is your reality, come join us at our next Free School for Farmworkers session! We will be thinking through strategies for finding off-season work, grounding ourselves in shared understanding of the inherent exploitation of farm labor in this country, and moving beyond hustle culture to think about both short and long term sustainability in this field.

We’ll be asset mapping our strengths and skills as farmworkers, thinking about winter projects and jobs that match or amplify those skills and hearing from long-term farmworkers who have creatively thought through off season-work, both for themselves and their crews, including leveraging their skills and power with the farm owners.

Al entrar en Octubre, en muchas áreas de clima frío, la promesa de descanso se acerca. Los mercados están en su cuenta regresiva, los CSA’s están llegando a su fin y la primera helada está cerca. Para muches agricultores, el invierno puede ser un tiempo de reflexión sobre la temporada pasada y de planificación de cultivos para la próxima.

Pero, ¡HABLEMOS EN SERIO! ¡La realidad para les trabajadores agrícolas es muy diferente!

Muchas granjas son estacionales o reducen su personal al mínimo durante la temporada baja, lo que significa que les trabajadores agrícolas enfrentan la incertidumbre anual de cómo salir adelante hasta que las granjas vuelvan a contratar en la primavera. Si la vivienda está vinculada al trabajo, les trabajadores agrícolas también pueden enfrentar la inseguridad habitacional además de todo eso. Les trabajadores agrícolas tienen la tarea de buscar empleos y muches encuentran sus salarios de invierno en cafeterías, bares, FedEx, Amazon, como conductores de autobuses y más. ¡Es un gran desafío que llega al final de lo que probablemente ha sido una temporada agotadora!

Si esta es tu realidad, ¡únete a nosotres en nuestra próxima sesión de la Escuela Libre para Trabajadores Agrícolas! Pensaremos en estrategias para encontrar trabajo fuera de temporada, nos basaremos en un entendimiento compartido sobre la explotación inherente al trabajo agrícola en este país, y buscaremos ir más allá de la cultura del ajetreo para reflexionar sobre la sostenibilidad a corto y largo plazo en este campo.

Identificaremos nuestras fortalezas y habilidades como trabajadores agrícolas, pensando en proyectos y trabajos de invierno que coincidan o amplifiquen esas habilidades. Escucharemos a trabajadores agrícolas con experiencia a largo plazo, quienes han pensado creativamente en el trabajo fuera de temporada, tanto para sí mismes como para sus equipes, incluyendo cómo han aprovechado sus habilidades y poder con les dueñes de las granjas.
