Making a Picture Frame with wedged through tenon.

Well suited for beginners.

Simply having fun in the workshop for a day!

Picture Frame

Gaku means picture frame. The design is inspired by Wedged mortice and tenon joinery. 

The basic design includes a few interesting skills, wedged mortice and tenon and the opportunity to use a few types of machines.

The size of the frame is set to hold a 5" x 7" picture.

This class is not focused on technical development but more for fun.

This class suits beginners. 

Come and have fun making a wedged tenon picture frame!

You will gain the following from signing up

  1. A Picture Frame with mat board cut to hold a 5" x 7" (150 x 175mm) picture.

  2. Hands-on experience with Wedge Tennon joinery.

  3. Machine work : Mortiser experience. 

  4. Hand work : Japanese chisel experience, using a Japanese saw and plane to make wedges.

  5. 2mm Acrylic sheet: precut, supplied.

  6. Matt paper: precut to 5" x 7", supplied.

  7. 3mm MDF: backboard, supplied.

  8. Fixing staples: supplied.

After living in Japan for 4 years John returned to Australia in 2002 and began studying woodwork at the Canberra School of Art. After working for a couple of local businesses he joined Koitoya in 2023.

Parking

Please park your car in the public parking area along Maryborough Street (Free), opposite J Racing.

We have two parking spots officially. Please contact me for the spot if you need to walk less for a health condition.

Way to the workshop

18 Maryborough Street is a battle axe block, located inside the block, so you will be walking through the driveway that leads to the block from Maryborough Street.

The driveway has 2 access points, one next to Aqua Safe Water Filters, and one next to J Racing.

Unit 4 is a blue painted building on the right-hand side of the block(SE end).


Thigs to bring

Please wear working shoes.

Bring your own water bottle and lunch.

Tea and coffee, snacks, filtered water
