STEM Central and BOP Industries are proud to announce the 'Gladstone Future Cities Challenge 2023', which this year shines the spotlight on the crucial and ever-evolving industry of future transportation. With the world's population expanding, globalisation intensifying and technology advancing, the transportation sector plays a pivotal role in shaping the future of our cities.

Over the past 30 years our cities have changed dramatically. With an increase in technology access, air travel, diversity, and global connectivity, our cities have continued to grow and evolve with us over the past 30 years.

The Gladstone Innovation Challenge 2023 will see students work towards developing city initiatives with a focus on transport. With a rapidly growing population, advancements in technology and the rise in alternative fuels, the transport sector is an exciting and dynamic space. Students will be tasked with revamping Gladstone's various transportation components in order to promote a more liveable, future-focused city.

This program is open for Year 5-8 students from the Gladstone region and will run throughout Term 3, 2023.

Frequently Asked Questions

When does the program start? 
The Gladstone Future Cities Challenge will be broken into three main sections. Commencing in Term Three, the competition will launch with a 'Future Of Transport Hackathon' on Wednesday the 12th of July to help students develop the foundation for their idea. 

From there, students will spend the term working on their idea with the help of weekly challenges. This will be facilitated through a series of 60 minute virtual masterclasses every Monday from 3:15pm - 4:15pm beginning on the 17th of July.

At the conclusion of the program, students will have the chance to showcase their Ideas at the Awards Ceremony later in the year.

Which students can participate
This event is open to all Gladstone School Students in Grades 5-8. Each school may have up to 10 x students participates.

Where will it be hosted? 
 

The Future Of Transport Hackathon Event will be held at Central Queensland University, Gladstone Campus.

The Future Design Challenge will be virtual, hosted online via Zoom.

The Award Ceremony will be held at Central Queensland University, Gladstone Campus.

How much does it all cost?

The program is free for all students who participate. 

When do I need to have my student names confirmed? 
By the end of Term 2, 2023.
