Event description

The Grand Rapids Women's Chorus is thrilled to present our first Spring Concert in two years* - “Our Bodies, Ourselves”, at the East Grand Rapids Performing Arts Center on Friday May 20, and Saturday May 21, 2022 at 8:00 pm.

This season we have been exploring our individual and collective stories that reflect the ways in which our bodies have defined us, limited us, exploited us, and freed us as women, and as people. Stories of our lives as well as stories reflected in our music have been a sometimes painful but enlightening journey. Somehow bringing them into the light or into a song has helped the chorus feel empowered.

The music of Laura Mvula, “She”, portrays a young person’s feeling of desperation and loneliness, but somehow she finds a small seed of hope to keep on going. Steven Smith’s “what I want”, Alessia Cara’s “Scars to Your Beautiful”, and from the Color Purple, “Miss Celie’s Blues”, provide pictures to our stories, as well as encouragement to find our strength. We take respite in the beauty of Norwegian-American composer Ola Gjeilo's “Tundra’, and with a silly, rhythmic, and very fun traditional Acadian piece about having an altercation with a cow from Canadian composer Jeanette Gallant, complete with spoons accompaniment.

Please join us for much more and an evening of uplifting stories and songs that empower us all towards love and acceptance of ourselves and each other.

Doors open at 7:30 pm; concerts begin at 8:00 pm.
