International Signing with Gavin Lilley (Part 1)
Description
Session description
International Sign (IS) can be useful when Deaf people who use different signed languages communicate, especially in international, multicultural and informal settings. For interpreters and translators, it also offers an opportunity to think about how communication works when people do not share a single signed language.
This introductory workshop, led by Gavin Lilley, looks at key features of International Sign and how they are used in practice. We will consider the role of visual strategies, gesture, context, shared signs and internationally recognised signs, as well as how to avoid relying entirely on one national signed language.
Demonstrations and practical group activities will help participants experiment with different approaches, start and maintain conversations, and develop both production and receptive skills. No prior experience of International Sign is expected.
Who is this session for?
Interpreters, translators and others with advanced signed-language skills who are new to International Sign or have limited experience using it.
