Event description

Join Professor Valerio Terraroli, one of Italy’s leading experts in Italian Art History for a special exhibition tour of Maestri: Influences from Italy to Australia.

Discover Antonio Dattilo-Rubbo’s pivotal role in connecting the vibrant artistic world of 19th-century Naples with the emergence of modern art in 20th-century Australia, explored through the works of Rubbo, his students, and contemporaries.

After the tour, stay for Maestri: Atelier & Aperitivo from 5:30 - 8:00 pm featuring aperitivo, drawing and live music.

Valerio Terraroli is a professor of History of Art Criticism, History of Artistic Literature, History of Decorative Arts, Museography and Museology at the University of Verona. He previously taught Contemporary Art History, Contemporary Art Methodology and Criticism, and History of Taste and the Decorative Arts at the University of Turin.

Maestri: Influences from Italy to Australia explores the legacy of Antonio Dattilo-Rubbo - artist, mentor, and agent of change in Australian modernism. Drawing from MAG&M’s collection, the National Art School, and private lenders, the exhibition traces his artistic lineage from Naples to Sydney. Featuring works by Dattilo-Rubbo and his influential students and teachers, it reflects on the generational impact of teaching, mentorship, and friendship.

This event is a collaboration between MAG&M, the Italian Cultural Institute Sydney, and the Consulate General of Italy in Sydney.
