There is no doubt that workers compensation is a daunting topic for employers. With over 100,000 serious Australian workers’ compensation claims in 2017-18 (Safe Work Australia), you cannot ignore that putting in place precautions is not enough to protect you legally when an injury occurs.

Managing employees who suffer from an illness, injury or mental ill-health can be complex and one of the most challenging areas faced by HR professionals. Employers have a legal obligation and duty of care to each employee but it's not a 'one-size-fits all' scenario.

With COVID-19 still impacting businesses, employees and communities hard, the role of the employer now extends to how they manage staff during a pandemic.

Being aware of your obligations and responsibilities when it comes to managing workers’ compensation claims, either physical or psychological, will help you minimise the impact to your business.

This half-day online training will cover:

Workers compensation legislation and your obligations in the workplace
An overview of the claims handling process
How to best challenge questionable claims
Responding to a workers’ compensation claim – what to include and how to present the information
Identifying and managing suitable duties when an employee has accepted a claim
Managing an employee’s return to work once a claim has been finalised.

Each participant will receive a workbook to keep that will help you navigate these tricky matters after the training.

About the trainers

Emily Slaytor
Senior Associate

Emily has acted for employers in a range of industries, including retail, education, real estate, manufacturing, insurance, social welfare organisations, the not-for-profit sector, and many types of medium enterprise businesses.

With a background working for State and Federal Members of Parliament, she is particularly interested in the political and legislative framework of employment law in Australia as an area of the law that is challenging and subject to amendment as Governments change.

Emily has worked with businesses of all sizes, including not-for-profit, in managing workers compensation claims, return to work matters and handling ill and injured worker claims. She specialises in training managers in how to handle these sensitive matters.

Ed Austin-Woods
Senior Associate

Ed provides strategic and commercially astute legal advice to employers on all aspects of employment law. Ed's experience includes providing advice on:

- unfair dismissal, general protections, underpayment, discrimination and bullying claims;

What is included in the price?

Course training booklet will be sent via post. Please provide the address when booking, and please provide your home address if working from home and would like it sent there.

What's the refund policy?

Participants will receive a full refund if they cancel at least seven (7) business days prior to the scheduled event. However, if participants cancel less than seven (7) business days before the event, no refund will be made. The place can be transfered to another member of the paid organisation. No-shows or cancellations after 7 days will receive the course training material and supporting documents. If there are insufficient participants, we reserve the right to cancel the event and participants will be transferred to another module of equal value or receive a full refund at their election. We will give three business days’ notice of any such cancellation.
