School Holiday Program - Japanese Cultural Experience For Children
Event description
Join our joint school holiday workshop this summer -Japanese calligraphy and Nerikiri (Japanese confectionery).
Participants will experience creating calligraphy from the three sets of Japanese written characters; Hiragana, Katakana and Kanji, and will be instructed in their chosen script and then making traditional Nerikiri.
Between each of these sessions there will be a break for drinks/snacks, Japanese craft games such as Origami and Japanese quizzes.

-The participants are able to take their own art home after the workshop

-Nerikiri is gluten-free and vegan friendly.
-Nerikiri ingredients: Adzuki beans, Lima beans, sugar, glutinous rice flour (gluten-free, despite its name), agar, and natural food colouring.
**Please inform us if your children have food allergies.
-The venue is located behind Legacy House in 159 Macquarie Street. Please walk down the lane way beside Legacy House to the ground floor of the rear building.
-The closest parking is The Centrepoint Carpark.

Nerikiri (Japanese confectionery) instructor : Minako Stewart
Minako has started making Nerikiri regularly since 2021 and has graduated from two Nerikiri courses with Japanese teachers. She is also a Kimono teacher, Tea ceremony and Japanese dance practitioner. She currently has regular classes including Kimono, Tea ceremony and Japanese sweets making at Sakura Japanese Culture Centre.
Japanese calligraphy instructor : Maiko Howell
Maiko is the master of Japanese traditional calligraphy and currently teaches calligraphy in Tasmania and to people overseas for online classes/events. Read more on “Host profile”.
