Maiko Howell was born and raised in Tokyo, Japan and began studying calligraphy at age 5 under the guidance of her mother – also a calligrapher.
Maiko became a master of Japanese traditional calligraphy in 2017 and has held workshops for children and adults throughout Eastern Japan, and now lives and teaches in Tasmania for physical classes/workshops, and promotes Japanes calligraphy as an art and all aspect of Japanese culture.
For people living overseas including Japan and the US, she also offers regular calligraphy classes/workshops virtually.
